Positions overview:

The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource has an opening for a Research Associate to help support our hard X-ray scattering program. This position would have a component (roughly 50%) that involves supporting the SSRL Materials Science user program and the remaining component being focused on synchrotron related materials science research. Support of the user program will involve coordinating with users in order to understand their scientific objectives, helping them to design characterization approaches which are able to address these objectives, on-boarding and training users on the beamline instrumentation, and training users on the fundamentals of interpreting x-ray scattering data. There will also be the opportunity to develop new collaborations with users in order to grow both existing and new user science areas. In this role the research associate will contribute to supporting users across the portfolio of the five hard x-ray scattering beamlines which include small angle, x-ray scattering, wide angle x-ray scattering, total scattering, and x-ray reflectivity. The materials science division has a mature program of users focused on the in-situ and operando characterization of materials structural dynamics which will enable exposure to a broad range of end use applications that range from energy sciences to sustainability to the interface of materials and biology. The research component will be focused on priority areas of the division and could be focused on either autonomous measurements for materials discovery, or characterization of soft matter for sustainable plastics production. This research will involve multi-institutional collaboration with top PIs as R1 institutions as well as other national labs.

Note : The Research Associate role is a fixed term staff position. Appointment duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • PhD in physics, materials sciences, chemistry, or related field, and demonstrated research experience in synchrotron-based X-ray science.

  • Experience with synchrotron X-ray scattering and/or neutron scattering.

  • Some experience with instrumentation design and development and computer-instrument interfacing is desirable, but not essential.

  • Strong experimental, analytical and computation skills.

  • Broad scientific interests

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population; good interpersonal skills are essential.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 to $100,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
