Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is operated by Stanford University on behalf of the federal government and is located near Menlo Park, CA. SLAC builds and operates world-class experimental facilities that enable revolutionary science research.

The SLAC Environmental, Safety & Health (ESH) Division is seeking a fire protection engineer (FPE) for the SLAC Fire Marshal Office with relevant experience for executing portions of a fire protection program in a federal big science research environment operating under Department of Energy (DOE) administrative orders.

The successful candidate will report to the SLAC Fire Marshal and assume responsibility for specific fire protection program elements at the discretion of the Fire Marshal. The SLAC Fire Marshal is an FPE who manages the SLAC Fire Marshal Office and provides DOE-assigned AHJ services to the SLAC community.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Under limited supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.

  • Execution of assigned SLAC fire protection program elements on behalf of the SLAC Fire Marshal. Initially, activities will include performance of accelerator fire hazard analysis reports and tracking of findings, performance of facility fire protection reports and tracking of findings, and fire protection systems impairment tracking and coordination.

  • Ensure program elements are in compliance with all applicable DOE-directed regulations.

  • Update and maintain SLAC fire protection program element resources including procedures, requirements, forms, databases, and tools.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) to advise and review fire protection on conventional and experimental research systems for code compliance and highly protected risk guidance, including the development of code interpretations and equivalency requests for unusual conditions.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall fire safety of employees and the community.

  • May develop and conduct employee training, emergency preparedness activities, and/or assurance programs.

  • Identify, assess, and monitor workplace fire hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) that could be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.

  • Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential fire hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace.

  • Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize fire hazard potential.

  • Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations.

  • May act as a lead or technical expert, and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on health/safety programs.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering or related allied/scientific field and three years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • A working knowledge of the requirements in codes and standards including NPFA and ICC or State of California fire safety codes.

  • Experience with using professional judgement in applying fire protection principles to a variety of large-scale industrial/research systems

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.

  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s)

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Registered Professional Engineer in fire protection engineering.

  • Experience with FM Global or similar highly protected risk industrial/research applications.

  • Experience working in a Department of Energy National Laboratory or a similar federal AHJ environment.

  • Familiarity with the fire protection requirements of DOE Order 420.1 and DOE Standard 1066.

  • Supervisory experience.

The expected pay range for this position is $99,000 - $129,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
